Principal : Iveta Hlavenkova
The Leeds Folk Fiddle Group is led by violin teacher and Principal of the Leeds Violin School, Iveta Hlavenkova. The pupils at Leeds Violin School are encouraged to join the group when they reach Grade 5 as most violin students find pleasure in playing with others, and particularly enjoy the contrast of playing lively, foot-tapping tunes as well as classical music.
The teachers at Leeds Violin School will help pupils with practising folk fiddle pieces if requested, and if they join the Leeds Folk Fiddle Group, can help students to rehearse the repertoire in order to enable them to progress to more advanced parts. The group plays a wide range of fiddle music, including Traditional Folk, Celtic, Bluegrass, Klezmer, Gypsy, Sevdah, Tango and French folk.
The group has been together since 2010, initially as the Country Ensemble until changing to the Leeds Folk Fiddle Group in 2011. There are currently 14 members in the group and new members who are violinists over Grade 5 are welcome to apply to join.
The Leeds Folk Fiddle Group is a very active group, playing at numerous charity events, concerts, tea parties, festivals, ceilidhs, pubs and folk clubs. A few of the recent highlights include:
• playing at the oldest folk club in England, the renowned Grove Inn in Leeds - Bluegrass Night and Friday Folk Night
• being invited to partipate in the live radio broadcast, Musicathlon, organised by East Leeds FM
• providing the musical entertainment for the 2014 Cider Festival in Pontefract
Rehearsals take place on Thursday evenings at the Yorkshire College of Music & Drama, 1 St Mark's Avenue, Leeds LS2 9BN. See Venues for the location of the Yorkshire College.
The leader of Leeds Folk Fiddle Group, Iveta Hlavenkova, is currently auditioning for new members to join from January 2015. If you would like to book an audition, please call or email Iveta Hlavenkova to arrange a date.
